Maricopa County Allocates $10 Million to Housing Projects in Phoenix

Housing

More than 550 people are expected to benefit each year from a $10 million investment voted on today by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. The funding will help convert an existing hotel to help seniors exit homelessness and build a new rental community to help families and individuals with low incomes.

"We're putting this funding to work for our community, making sure that our seniors have a place to call home and families are able to not only afford living in our County’s largest city, but also have a home where they can thrive," said Clint Hickman, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors in District 4.

The funding for this collaborative effort with the City of Phoenix comes from Maricopa County’s allocation of federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars.

Supervisor Steve Gallardo of District 5 expressed his support for the project, stating, "I'm thrilled that we’re able to use our authority and budget to make things better for seniors and families who need affordable homes. It's a big deal for our community, and it's happening now." Gallardo added, "This housing is going to change lives and I’m proud to play a role in this decision."

Housing for Seniors

$5 million will be used to help fund the conversion of a 125-room hotel to affordable rental housing units designed to help people over age 55 exit homelessness. The property, located at 8130 N. Black Canyon Highway, will have studio units, including accessible or adaptable units for individuals with disabilities. Forty units will be reserved for people with a household income at or below 30 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) and will come with on-site support services and access to employment and career training opportunities.

Housing for Families

$5 million will be used to help construct an affordable housing rental community called Horizon on Villa. The community, located adjacent to Edison Park near 20th St. and Roosevelt, will include 109 units. The community will offer free Wi-Fi for residents as well as a multi-purpose room, a fitness room, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Residents will have access to support services including GED and ESL classes, job fairs, Head Start, after-school programming for children, and referrals to homeownership and health programs.

This $10 million investment to help residents in the City of Phoenix is part of a series of solutions that Maricopa County has funded along the housing continuum to help renters and homeowners, as well as support people exiting homelessness with opportunities to secure housing.
