Gilbert Road Bridge at Salt River

UPDATE: Closure Continues on Gilbert Road, Thomas Road to State Route 87 (Beeline Highway)

Gilbert Road, from Thomas Road to SR 87 (Beeline Highway) remains closed due to continuing water flows from the Salt River Project (SRP). The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will not be able to provide a timeline for reopening until the riverbed is dry enough for engineers to investigate the condition of the roadway following the unprecedented release of water.

This year’s water release caused historic flooding which demonstrates the need for the larger all-weather crossing provided by the new Gilbert Road Bridge. During the flooding events, the project has adjusted for the circumstances with work continuing in areas unaffected by water flows.

MCDOT is continuing to coordinate with SRP during the water releases, which are decreasing but anticipated to continue until at least mid-May. The closure will continue to be in place while water flows in the Salt River. More information will be provided after MCDOT can fully assess any damages to Gilbert Road where it crosses the Salt River.

Public safety is our highest priority. MCDOT is evaluating options to complete the project in an efficient manner minimizing public inconvenience.

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) and the City of Mesa, is constructing a new bridge over the Salt River.

The new four-lane Gilbert Road Bridge will replace the existing two-lane bridge and low water crossing, which can become flooded during high water flows in the Salt River. Located on Gilbert Road between Thomas Road and State Route 87 (Beeline Highway), the bridge will be built in phases and provide two northbound and two southbound lanes. The project includes new pavement, signage and improved drainage in the project area.

Occasional lane restrictions can be anticipated during construction. One lane of travel for both north- and southbound traffic will be accommodated during the construction to ensure a connection to State Route 87.

In the event a full closure occurs due to flooding or water releases by the Salt River Project, MCDOT will provide recommended alternative routes for travel.

Gilbert Road Bridge construction is anticipated to be completed in 2025.
