Vaccines for k-12 School and Childcare Staff

Maricopa County Public Health is partnering with school districts to host COVID-19 vaccine events specifically to serve staff of public, private, and charter K-12 schools, as well as childcare facilities including home-based childcare sites. Each of these host districts will serve eligible childcare staff and K-12 school staff whose facilities are within their geographic boundaries (see map below).

Please reach out to the district hosting the events for your facility’s region as soon as you can to find out when they have vaccine events scheduled and how to register.

How School Vaccination Sites Will Work

These vaccine events will roll out to regions over the next couple months, not all at once, based on space availability, scheduling with pharmacies, and other logistics. MCDPH is pairing each of these host districts with pharmacies, which will provide the vaccines and administer them at the vaccine events.

Most school vaccine events will be planned for 2-3 days in a row between Thursdays and Sundays. This is to make it easier for you to get vaccinated around your work schedule.

Vaccine Brands

Most school sites will be administering Moderna vaccine. If you got your first dose with Pfizer vaccine at a different site, you need to get Pfizer for your second dose.

Second Doses

You will need a second dose a few weeks after getting your first dose (a minimum of 21 days afterwards for Pfizer and a minimum of 28 days afterwards for Moderna). Second-dose events will be set up at the same locations about 5 weeks after the first-dose events. You will need to receive this second dose to get maximum protection from the vaccine.

Eligibility

You are eligible if you work for a:

  • Public K-12 school
  • Private K-12 school
  • Charter K-12 school
  • Childcare facility
  • Home-based child care if you provide care for 5 or more children who do not live with you

These events are only for the staff of these facilities, and not any other family members.

Please be prepared to show proof of employment.
This can include:

  • An employee ID
  • A pay stub
  • A verification letter from a family who uses your services

Locations

If you are eligible based on the criteria above, please see the map below to find out which district is serving the geographic region your school/facility is in. Contact that school district using the link in the map or in this PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

You should contact your school or school district administration and ask if there is an event planned already.

The map includes website links where you can connect to school district locations to find more information.

You should go to the school Point of Dispensing (POD) site in closest proximity to your primary workplace.

No. The vaccines provided to the school PODs are reserved for school and childcare personnel only.

  • We recommend you receive your second dose from the same vaccine provider or POD that you received your first dose.
  • Most school PODs are administering Moderna vaccine, and most of the other community PODs (county and state PODs) are administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
  • You must receive the same vaccine for both doses.

We recommend that you keep your scheduled appointment. Once your school group announces their event and opens registration, you might find you can be vaccinated at the School POD at an earlier date. At that time, you can decide which event to attend for vaccination.

Anyone who needs to be on-site for school to function is eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at a school POD.

  • This includes, but is not limited to, teachers, custodial staff, bus drivers, substitute teachers, and school administrators who do not work remotely.
  • Childcare workers are also eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at a school POD event that is available to staff from the school district in which they provide childcare services.
  • Licensed and unlicensed childcare workers are eligible. Eligible childcare workers provide care at least 3 days per week for 5 or more children who do not live in the workers household.

Moderna vaccine is being allocated to most of these schools PODs.

  • If you already got your first dose elsewhere, check before you make an appointment to confirm if it is the same manufacturer being offered at your site.
  • If your school vaccine site is offering a different manufacturer, we encourage you to return to the site where you got your first dose.
  • These vaccines are intended and studied based on receiving the same presentation (Moderna or Pfizer) for both doses.

You can learn more about the Moderna vaccine on the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/info-by-product/moderna/index.html.
