Working Together, Saving Lives

Plans to Improve Animal Care and Control

Over the past few years, Maricopa County Animal & Control has made measurable progress in the overarching mission to save lives.

As many of you are aware, the current east shelter, located at Rio Salado and Loop 101, is clearly showing its age and does not meet nationally accepted standards of care nor our own high standards. After exploring several other options, the decision was made to pursue a new shelter in the east valley. From the plans that were developed, estimated construction costs of the new shelter exceeded the funds that had been set aside by more than 15 million dollars. This overage, coupled with the unknown economic impact to county funding in FY2021 and 22 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has placed the construction project on hold.
