As of March 16, 2016 all of Maricopa County's properties became entirely tobacco-free. The idea behind the tobacco-free policy was promoted for years and was finally officially implemented. Extensive research supports that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and in the welfare of our employees we have decided to promote an entirely tobacco-free environment.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. It causes many different cancers as well as chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis, heart disease, pregnancy-related problems, and many other serious health problems.
Maricopa County offers two tobacco cessation programs, at no cost, to employees enrolled in a County-sponsored medical plan. Additionally, Maricopa County offers medical premium reductions for tobacco-free employees as well as eligible tobacco users who want to quit. You can learn more about these programs and incentives on the Stop Using Tobacco page.
